Churchill was right about democracy being the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried. Yet we should be able to respond to evidence of democracys failings with something more than Churchillian resignation. So why not address the problem in our education system, by teaching basic economics and statistics in high schools? Students usually now encounter statistics, if at all, in college. But simple statistics could easily be taught along with algebra in high school. Likewise, principles of economics could be taught in social studies classes.I have long thought that a year of economics should be standard in high school, much as American history is now. I even have a good textbook to recommend.

Kristof on Teaching Economics
A great idea from Nicholas Kristof:
Welcome Eli!
My best friend Paige had her second little boy yesterday afternoon. Welcome to the world Elijah Robert Tucker. We decided he looks like a quarterback!

Preppy Wedding Placecards
I got an e-mail last week from Sarah. She is in the final stages of wedding planning for her September Connecticut soiree and was looking for some preppy ideas on how to display place cards at her sit down reception.
Ive got a few ideas for her (and all of you), so here goes .
How about writing handwritten notes to your guests and addressing the envelope with their table number. I like these mini notes from papersource, but Kates Paperie is a good source too. You can coordinate with your wedding colors and it certainly sets the tone for a personalized, intimate wedding. If your wedding is outdoors, string some twine and use clothespins to attach the notes.
Hydrangeas are the theme of Sarahs wedding, so I like using them as a bed to display handwritten stark white cards.
Or she could create mini hydrangea topiaries that look like this precious potted moss placecard? And better yet, it doubles as a favor.
I also like this preppy Martha ribbon board. This looks to be pretty easy to make and it would also be easy to customize to your wedding colors. And whats a preppy wedding without a little grossgrain?

Here are some pictures with links to some other favorites (all from Martha - she is the best).

burgundynbrown: bridesmaid screenprint
"me next" fine art silkscreened print
ah. rabid bridesmaids at a bouquet toss. an homage to the desperation i feel in having gone to a new salon yesterday to color my hairs "slightly darker" only to find myself looking like morticia addams' and orphan annie's tall wan love child. eight days is plenty of time to fix this, right?

weekly DBA: wedding coozies
this week's david's bridal award: bride and groom beer coozies
if you're going to drink beer from a can on your wedding day, and i have *nothing* against that, i must say, must there be maribou feathers involved? have you ever dealt with wet maribou feathers? don't answer in front of your betrothed.
how does one spell coozie, anyway? koozy? qoozi?
again, not speaking from the high ground -- one of my mom's wedding favors was bright neon-colored foam beer coozies that said 'changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes...'
neither of these things is nearly as bad an idea as the maribou feather
bridal shot glass. hmmm... don't remember anything after the macarena... and why the hell are these feathers in my teeth? pfffft.
(what's a DBA?)
The New Protectionism
This is bad news:
Passed by a vote of 20-1, the Senate Finance Committee's measure would allow U.S. companies to seek anti-dumping duties on goods from any country that maintains a "fundamentally misaligned" exchange rate after being formally cited by the United States.I am hoping for a veto threat. For now, kudos to Senator Maria Cantwell for being the sole vote against the measure.
