#272: ...and beyond.

a set of 5 lanterns (batteries included!) will set you back $10. imagine a makeshift chandelier filled with these little bits of light along with huge white tissue pomanders and those deliciously large white balloons. sounds like a party i'd want to go to.

How things have changed

The Crimson reports:

When Harvards future dean of admissions and financial aid was applying to the College in 1962, the first two teachers he asked for letters of recommendation refused.

They wouldnt write for Harvard because they thought it was a bunch of Communists, a bunch of atheists, a bunch of rich snobs, and if you went there youd flunk out and youd lose your soul, said William R. Fitzsimmons 67.

Today at Harvard, it is almost impossible to flunk out.

Summers on the GSEs

Larry opines on Fannie and Freddie:

These institutions viability with anything like their current operating model depends on the implicit federal guarantee of their several trillion dollars of liabilities. It is appropriate at a time of crisis in the mortgage markets that they become, as their regulator put it last week, the lender of first, last and every resort.

It is not appropriate that their shareholders heads I win, tails you lose bet with the taxpayer be expanded for this purpose. Given their past and prospective losses, their regulator supported by the Treasury, the Fed and, if necessary, Congress should insist that they stop paying dividends and raise capital promptly and substantially as they expand their lending.

Such stuff as dreams are made on

From Webloggistics:

I wake up, groggy, bed-headed, pajamaed. Lying next to me, fully dressed on top of the bed is Gregory Mankiw, the economist. "You're Greg Mankiw," I intelligently remark.

He springs out of bed and stands up. "Would you like to discuss consumer surplus and tariffs?"

"Why are you here?" I ask.

"Don't you remember the Make-a-Wish Foundation?"

brooklyn-based milda sedra has not one but *three* etsy stores. the largest, emunique, has colorful wire-wrapped and crocheted gold and silver jewelry; simplemunique is a pared down version of the same, and her wedding line, bridalemunique, is a relatively new offshoot. she takes on custom work as well, maybe sets for the bridal party or special gifts.

love: beirut

off-topic! here's my obsession of the week: this sweet, sad, mournful, joyful, intimate series of single-take videos from beirut:

"i'll gamble away my fright..." --

le sigh. makes me want to fall in love, move to brooklyn, and play the french horn.
there's one for each song on the album at flyingclubcup.com
what's your non-traditional love song, friends? maybe i'll start a series.

Hypocrisy Indeed

A friend recommends today's Washington Post column by Steve Pearlstein. It starts as follows:
Well, isn't this rich: Max Baucus of Montana and Chuck Grassley of Iowa, chairman and ranking member, respectively, of the Senate Finance Committee are suddenly in a lather that taxpayer funds might be implicated in the Federal Reserve's rescue of Bear Stearns. Would that be the same Max Baucus and Chuck Grassley who have made careers out of protecting and enhancing the lavish system of import restrictions, price supports and other subsidies that have transformed American farming and ranching into a vast socialist enterprise?

pocketfullofpoesy: engraved rings

silver ring, hand engraved,small size4 1/2
{ hand-engraved silver ring }

"my life and my love" -- sounds beautiful in any language, no?

victoria of pocketfullofpoesy is new to etsy but has been creating beautiful rings in sydney for 14 years. not to mention she addressed me as 'ms. smallstar' -- how can i resist? you know how i feel about hand-engraved or stamped jewelry -- am in love with words and with the idea of creating something so intensely *personal* and meaningful. victoria works in both gold and silver and happily takes on custom wedding work, and prices with shipping from australia are quite reasonable.

her shop announcement says she's away until the 6th of april, so hoping this will be a nice surprise when she returns. check out her lovely, lovely things:
